Members of the Society of Jesus founded in 1540 by Ignatius Loyola. They were the foremost Catholic intellectuals during the Counter-Reformation, effective in winning back many lapsed Catholics in England after 1578. A number of Jesuits were apprehended and suffered the supreme penalty for treason.
