Evangelical Anglican and outstanding gospel preacher, also a capable Hebrew scholar. From 1748 he was associated with the London churches of St George’s, Billingsgate, St Dunstan’s-in-the-West and St Anne’s, Blackfriars (now united with St Andrewby- the-Wardrobe). A friend of George Whitefield and the Countess of Huntingdon, he drew large crowds in London and elsewhere on preaching tours, sharing with Whitefield and the Wesleys a desire to see the gospel spread throughout the nation.
