Thomas Coram was an eighteenth-century sea captain who, seeing the plight of infants born to prostitutes and other women unable to care for their offspring, established the famous Foundling Hospital in Bloomsbury. The Hospital received considerable support from George F. Handel, William Hogarth and other artists. He is buried in St. Andrew’s, Holborn.
