Private secretary to Cardinal Wolsey and later King Henry VIII, he was made bishop of Winchester in 1531. Gardiner was imprisoned in Edward VI’s reign, but he was made Lord High Chancellor under Mary and vigorously prosecuted Protestants such as John Rogers and John Bradford. He died in 1555.
