The extensive priory of the Hospitallers of St John of Jerusalem located northwest of Smithfield had, by the fourteenth century, become notorious for its luxury. Hence it was attacked and burned by Wat Tyler’s mob during the Peasants’ Revolt (1381). The priory buildings were restored after this, and in 1504 the main gate on the south was rebuilt. Later in the sixteenth century, when the priory was suppressed (1540), most of buildings were destroyed and taken away, but the gateway somehow survived. It remains today, under the custody of the new Order of St John. Along with the Norman crypt of St John’s, Clerkenwell, it is a priceless remnant of the proud Crusader order.
