Churches have stood on this site since at least 1212, quite possibly earlier; some evidence of a Saxon building has been found. The present building was erected in 1724–28 by James Gold. It is still a parish church. Its pleasant tower and clock provide a picturesque sight looking north on Bishopsgate with open ground in the foreground. The galleried interior in classical style is nicely lit by a dome and lantern installed in the nineteenth century. It possesses the original pulpit and lectern and an organ originally installed in 1764.
