A prominent soldier and member of Parliament, he was arrested for his Lollard views. Although he escaped, he was eventually put to death at Smithfield. Oldcastle’s reputation was maligned by his enemies and in some quarters he was made the object of derision. Shakespeare’s comic figure Sir John Falstaff was drawn from this source.
