In 1709 a sermon preached in St Paul’s by Dr Henry Sacheverell against Nonconformist (or Whig) ministers led to his impeachment by Parliament. Rioting broke out by those in sympathy with his views and several Nonconformist meeting houses were sacked and the contents burned. Sacheverell went unpunished and actually made political gain from the incident. He is buried in St Andrew’s, Holborn.
