Nicholas Zinzenorf (1700-60)

Nicholas Ludwig, Count von Zinzendorf, was the founder of the Moravian Brethren or Moravian Church. His family background and early life in Germany was within the Pietist movement, but his Christian experience broadened through contact with other branches of the church. In 1722 he established a Christian community for Bohemian refugees, called Herrnhut, on his estate at Berthelsdorf. It still exists in Saxony. The Community sent out numerous foreign missionaries, and he himself travelled widely preaching and establishing Moravian congregations. Sometime after 1736 he began a congregation in London and for five years did pastoral work there, 1749–50, 1751–55.
