Hawksmoor was deputy-surveyor at Chelsea Hospital under Christopher Wren and was involved in the architecture of numerous palaces and great homes. He was Wren’s assistant in the building of St Paul’s, and was the architect of St George’s, Bloomsbury and St Mary Woolnoth. He was also surveyor-general of Westminster Abbey.
