Just at the western edge of today’s Greater London on a country road running south from Amersham (between Watford and High Wycombe) is the picturesque village of Chalfont St Giles. Here on the main road is the cottage where Milton spent a year, 1665–66, to escape the plague raging in London. And here was completed the great epic, Paradise Lost. The cottage has some relics of the poet, and bookings can be made for public visits.
