A Benedictine monk sent by Pope Gregory I to assist Augustine at Canterbury in Britain. In 604 he was consecrated as bishop of the East Saxons and a cathedral was built for him by King Ethelbert on Ludgate Hill in London. In 610 he was banished to France upon the death of the East Saxon king Sigebert but returned to become the third archbishop of Canterbury.
