Fisher was bishop of Rochester under Henry VIII and a strong defender of traditional Roman Catholic doctrine. He protested against Henry’s divorce from Catherine of Aragon and was imprisoned in the Tower for refusing to take the oath supporting the Act of Succession. He was beheaded on Tower Hill in June 1535. Along with Thomas More he was canonized by Pope Pius XI in 1936.
