Humanism

Humanism, or the Humanities, also known in England as the ‘New Learning’, was an intellectual movement growing out of the Renaissance. Humanist scholars in the north of Europe, Erasmus of Rotterdam in particular, went beyond the limits of the theological learning of medieval Scholastics to study the ancient biblical languages. This, in turn, aided the Reformation by enabling theologians and Bible translators to refer to the original text rather than having to rely on the Latin translation.
