Duke of Norfolk

The Dukes of Norfolk remained Roman Catholic, though the third duke, Thomas Howard, conformed to the Church of England in Henry’s reign. He was sentenced to death for treason in 1547 but escaped death because Henry died a few hours before the sentence could be carried out. The fourth duke, also Thomas Howard, was executed in 1572 because he was involved in a conspiracy to wed Mary, Queen of Scots, in an attempt to depose Elizabeth and place Mary on the throne of England. He was beheaded in the Tower.
