'Dick' H.R.L Sheppard (1880-1937)

London clergyman from 1907 to 1926 and vicar of St Martin-in-the-Fields from 1914 onward. He was greatly gifted in reaching out to non-churched people and through his ministry St Martin-in-the-Fields became nationally famous. During World War I he gave much of his time to servicemen. He was one of the first churchmen to recognize the possibilities of radio, as a result of which grew the Academy of St Martin-in-the-Fields. After the war he became an ardent pacifist.
