Book of Common Prayer

This is the worship-book of the Church of England, consisting of prayers and readings for various services of the church throughout the year. Initially the work of Thomas Cranmer, it was adopted by Parliament in 1549, revised in 1552. During the 17th century it was the centre of controversy between the Anglicans and the Puritans, which was resolved by the Act of Uniformity of 1662. The 1662 version remains the official order of worship for the Church of England, although most parishes today use more recent alternative forms of worship.
