Alfred the Great (849-99)

Alfred, the greatest of the Saxon monarchs, was king of the West Saxons from 871. He was responsible for restoring the church in Britain after Danish raids had laid waste much of the eastern half of the land. He was also instrumental in translating some of the great Christian classics into Anglo-Saxon (Old English), including Bede’s History of the English Church. He built up the defences of the City of London to prevent further attacks.
